We have coined the term 'dropout' or 'kids at risk' to refer to students who cannot or will not remain in educational institutions through to graduation. Though the reasons for veering away from formal education are as varied as the young people themselves, many don't so much drop out as become disengaged over a period of years. School gradually becomes irrelevant. Perhaps the curriculum no longer speaks to what the student sees as necessary for their particular reality or the environment itself seems hostile to the individual's culture or values. Still others do suddenly disappear off the radar screen as a result of a crisis in their lives -- a tangle with the law, pregnancy, the death of a parent or drug use, to name only a few.

Elliott Jaques has now over 50 years of research on human behaivior. His views are radically different than all the personality theorists and group dynamics experts. Even though he was one of the founding members of the Tavistock Institute he has long left the beliefes that were corner pillars of this well known institution. After years of research he could conclude that the structure and the system in with we are engaged in will determine our behaivior more than anything. He also found that people have a maturing innate capability of handling complexity. Some people born with a higher capability and some less. Thiss capability will then be the determining factor for the size of the job that one will successfully opperate.
The discussion that I would like to take form is a critical view on what Dr. Jaques has concluded based on his research. This should then be a platform for us to make sure that he recieves the recognition for his work that he could potentially deserv.

204 ask questions about objects and events in the local environment and develop plans to investigate those questions.
205 observe and investigate their environment and record the results
207 work collaboratively to carry out science related activities and communicate ideas, procedures, and results.
Materials needed: paper and pencil to record, everything they brought with them.
Procedure:
1. First ask the students to compile a list of everything each person has brought with them to class today.
Suggest ways to organize the list, possibly categorizing under the headings: in book bag, in purse, clothing, on the body, lunch/snacks, etc.
Also have the students write beside each item whether they believe it is a need or a want.
15 minutes
2. Discuss and ask why we would compile such a list. Discuss and ask what the purpose might be of making this list. What could we do with this information? Note comments. Pose the questions, How are these things technology? What are the purposes of these items? And how do they affect our lives? Do they make life easier or more convenient for us? Discuss what kind of information we could explore from these lists. Brainstorm some things we want to find out about these items. Possibly: What are they made of? Where do they come from? How do we obtain them? Why do we have them? Observe and analyze.
10 minutes
3. Collaboratively compile a list of important questions that would be important to ask about the items on the lists. Have the students copy this into their notebooks for later investigations. Using the lists compiled have the students break off into pairs and choose 2-4 items from their lists to do an analysis and investigation.

I build kayaks and i'm interested in learning what is important to you in a kayak. Is weight an issue? If cost was not an issue, would you prefer a fiberglass kayak over a plastic one? Many of us work in a fully integrated environment where children with special physical, learning or behavioral needs come together. For the teacher or youth worker striving to address the individual requirements of all children in this environment, the task may be enormous. Many feel that they have not been adequately prepared for such a challenge either through their initial education or subsequent professional development sessions.
How do we ensure excellent programs and educational opportunities for all children? Where can we go for help, resources, support, if these aren't readily available through our employers? Are there some best practices we can share, case stories or special tools that can help us do our work better to benefit kids?
Technology is an example of one tool that has proven to be a boon for many workers supporting special needs children. Besides assistive technologies such as special keyboards, screens and audio peripherals, so much of what is available through technology lends itself to being adapted to individual needs. Children can proceed at their own speed, safe in the realization that a computer doesn't get impatient or judge and that much of the 'product' produced is often impressive enough to build self-esteem.

As the problem of youth violence has grown, so has our understanding of the problem and some possible solutions. A small percentage of youth are responsible for the bulk of violent juvenile crime. Most violent crimes committed by youth are committed against other juveniles. Many involve handguns and/or drug use.
Violence is a learned behavior. Children who are neglected, left alone, or uncared for, without appropriate role models, often do not learn right from wrong. Children who suffer abuse at the hands of family violence often learn that violence is natural, even expected.
Fortunately there is evidence that at-risk youth, if reached early enough, can be saved from a life of violence. The challenge facing us is to take what is known about youth violence and apply it now to reach at-risk youth before they take their first step into the world of crime. We must deal firmly with those who are already in trouble.
This forum is provided for community leaders, educators, after school youth service providers, law enforcement, and other individuals and groups in both the public and private sectors, to discuss and share proven strategies that work to reduce youth violence.
